speech analysis - in progress

Scott, regardless of the situation, tends towards informal speech with a lot of modifiers and loosely strung phrases. His every day vocabulary is very colloquial, almost sloppy at times, and he definitely doesn't have any sort of precision and finality in his speech - words like "definitely" and "absolutely" feature, as opposed to phrased like "sort of", "I think", "maybe", etc. He also likes listing things - "something that works, anything that works, something of use, I don't know". He also has the tendency to repeat phrases if he's stalling for time or unsure of something. Another tactic he uses is to switch phrases/topics midsentence and try to take the topic somewhere else.

That said, he's not afraid to fill his speech with technical jargon if he knows the other person can understand him or if he starts getting really passionate about a subject (like nanorobotics and the microverse). However, he is a technician and scientist second and a father first; hence, he has a natural inclination to explain things in terms people understand, using metaphor and simile if needed. Of course, at the same time, if he wants to seem smart in front of people he'll also pad his speech with a number of unnecessary words - "and have actually managed to not break too many laws subsequently."

He's very much a pop culture encyclopedia, though he doesn't whip out references quite as often as another famous insect-themed superhero. He doesn't make much use of names, preferring general pronouns such as "man", "guys", "ladies."

comments

- "hey, look."
- very informal ("hey,..." "like,..." "yeah" "c'mon")
- not very decisive language ("sometimes", "maybe")
- definitely more of a light-hearted tone (thanks fraction)
- overuses somewhat dramatic descriptors ("totally works", "pretty dumb", "completely horrifying microscopic monsters", "latest and greatest", "wee tiny jerks")
- BASICALLY likes being wordy and talking

FINISH THIS LATER

comments
